UPDATE:. The last meeting was on Tuesday June 3, 2025. The main event was the presentations by five of our six mini grant winners. The sixth mini grant winner, Sara Long, will be with us for the September 3rd meeting to present her mini grant achievements. SCRTA Vice-President, Nancy Wilhelm, gave us some TRS updates and Social Security updates. She also presented a IRTA webinar slideshow that gave some details on how to designate a representative on a retired teacher's behalf to take care of retirement needs through TRS in the event that the retired teacher may not have the ability to do so themselves. Ione Elliot, long time SCRTA member and secretary, was recognized as our unit honoree at this meeting and presented with an IRTA blanket that as initially presented at the last IRTA biennial conference in 2023. Finally we geared up for another Possum Lodge cookout to be held on June 28, 2025 which is our primary fundraiser to support our ongoing annual mini grant program for teachers in the classrooms in Shelby County. A large IRTA tote bag was the door prize won by Ginnie Hostetler at the close of the meeting.

President's Message

Greetings SCRTA Members,
Happy Fall! I hope that you have been enjoying the cool down we have been experiencing lately after a pretty wickedly warm July and good part of August. I remember returning to school in what everyone called "The Fall", which was really the end of summer and being so hot that my students and I had most of our paperwork stuck to our sweaty arms or blowing off the desks due to the placement of various box fans. So glad the the majority of schools have climate control in their buildings for summer and winter.
I hope that you will join us at the beautiful Army Corps of Engineers Lake Shelbyville Visitors Center for our four annual meetings.  We do our best to set them on the first Wednesday of the months of April, June, September and November starting at 9AM and concluding around 11AM. Please watch for the newsletter that is emailed out announcing the meetings and an email that I draft that includes a Zoom link if you want to join us online through your smart phone or computer. We stand strong together to protect and inform the retired teachers of Shelby County.
