UPDATE:. The last meeting was on Wednesday, June 5, 2024. Jessica Hoselton, Executive Director of IRTA, spoke about the IRTA Political Action Committee and the IRTA Foundation which helps retirees as well as future teachers. She also gave a brief legislative update. Mike Schmidt, President of IRTA, spoke on the history of TRS and IRTA and how they improve benefits for teachers and retirees. During the second half of the meeting many reports were presented from the winning teachers in Shelby County that received minigrants this year. The "Orff Hand Chimes & Yarn Mallets" presentation was not presented but hopefully will be at a future SCRTA meeting before the year is over. SCRTA members in attendance were Bud Wilhelm, Nancy Wilhelm, Jim Sparks, Kim Sparks, LaVonne Chaney, Norma Walters, Sylvia Miller, Patsy Lenz, John Rentfrow, Janey Schults, Lara Pancoast, Bob Pancoast, Ginnie Hostetler, Jennifer Harvey and Jane Shull.
President's Message
Greetings SCRTA Members,
Fall is upon us and school is back in session. Hopefully there will be some moderate temperatures to finish all the outdoor chores before much cooler weather arrives. I was able to complete a home health care check-up through Aetna that was quick and easy. Results will be shared with my doctor and I should receive a $50 gift card for agreeing to the service. As I stated in the newsletter, I have been contacted to return to the classroom after 10 years of retirement. Although intrigued, I had to decline due to caring for my parents and other volunteer activities.
We had a wonderful turn out for our cook-out fundraiser with Possum Lodge. $1700 was raised and will be used in our upcoming minigrants to be presented in January 2025. Many thanks to John Rentfrow, Lana Pancoast, Brenda Bogart, Ginnie Hostetler, Bud Wilhelm, Nancy Wilhelm, LaVonne Chaney and Kim Sparks for wrapping sandwiches so robustly!
The November election is rapidly approaching and I encourage all SCRTA members to be as good seekers of the truth by digging through as many avenues as possible as you were when in the classroom. IRTA will share which candidates they recommend based on their promise to protect retired teacher benefits and make education a top priority.
Best wishes to you all and thank your for being a member of SCRTA to stay informed and be a part of something special!
